MARVEL OUS

Maritime Industry's Virtual Enterprise Linkage
ESPRIT 4: 20623 (11/95 - 02/98)

.
General Information:

MARVEL OUS is an end-user driven project. The impetus behind the development comes from the end-users of the system, the maritime Industry itself.

MARVEL OUS will identify and harmonise generic requirements for use of advanced IT and CT in manufacturing and engineering across the maritime industry, building up links with other sectors for their mutual benefit.

MARVEL OUS will make a significant contribution to the preparation of the European Maritime Industry for future, global, distributed manufacturing processes. This will be a natural spin off from the development of the integrating infrastructure and the implementation of the organisational and cultural change, developed to facilitate internal European concurrent engineering and computer supported co-operative working methods.

MARVEL OUS is running Special Interest Groups (Maritime Net, EDI, Product Data Management) to discuss solutions found on an broad industrial basis. MARVEL OUS has defined Process Chains for design, manufacturing, logistics and survey and has identified suitable Information and Communication Technology to support these chains. MARVEL OUS is promoting application concepts through pilot installation of state of the art technology. Using these installations allowed to derive technology gaps in current applications and therefore MARVEL OUS identified and triggered new RTD projects.

MARVELOUS will present the following results:

  • A document which will be continuously updated, describing the User requirements for each process chain reflected in MARVEL OUS/s workpackages.
  • A demonstrator of a virtual enterprise reflecting real business cases in order to evaluate available technology and thus define and verify the user requirements and technology gaps.
  • A document describing the Standards (their deficiencies and work-around) promoted by MARVEL OUS and thus contribution to existing standardisation processes in ISO for STEP, EDI, SGML, etc.
  • A document outlining the deficiencies in RTD from the industries perspective elaborating on the white areas of existing programmes road maps.

Openness: MARVEL OUS is an Open User Syndicate, which means that interested companies can join the MARVEL OUS Special Interest Groups . MARVEL OUS is interested in working together especially with companies with a complementary profile to the consortium profile, such as ship owners and suppliers. But also additional shipyards and classification societies are welcome to contribute to and participate in the SIG/s. Interested parties are thus invited to the project assemblies and will receive project documents for review.
