FRONTIER

Open System for Collaborative Design
ESPRIT 4: 20082 (01/96 - 12/98)

.
General Information:

The project is concerned with multi-partner collaborative design optimisation. This is a key area for future European industrial competitiveness, requiring leading-edge capabilities to improve designs whilst significantly reducing costs and time-to-market. The project is developing a system for product optimisation based on satisfying multiple objectives, and resolving conflicts and tradeoffs. A key feature is the flexibility to accommodate the many diverse analysis tools and techniques currently in use across European industry. Design problems from five major industrial sectors have been used to define the requirements of the system, and these are also being used to validate its effectiveness and generality. The optimisation of a design is highly computationally intensive. The project uses existing HPCN technology and parallel solvers where appropriate. The system has been developed in phases, synchronised with user trials in the aerospace, shipbuilding, domestic appliance, heating, and diesel engine sectors. The system is expected to be available to customers during 1999.
